I think narratively it helps emphasize how the things Marjorie does are really not far off from normal things kids do, but it's easy to read the other way too. She also has moments of violence like kicking another girl at soccer practice, and she takes some paint off the door of the house in the first chapter, like Marjorie damages the walls in her room and the character in The Yellow Wallpaper rips sections off the wall. Marjorie mentions hearing Merry talking to herself early on, and when Merry's dad talks about the holy trinity Merry makes a joke about her head "getting too crowded with all those people to talk to." The biggest thing I can't believe I didn't notice the first time was that Merry is speaking in a different voice (her written signs) for the whole day she kills her family.

She also writes her blog under a fake name.

Right in the beginning we learn that she doesn't want to go by her real name (Meredith), and there are lots of direct mentions of how she likes to do voices (especially in one of the family dinner scenes). I'm still convinced that nobody was actually possessed and I think the book is better that way, but I was amazed by how many hints there are that Merry really is possessed. I know I'm jumping into an oldish thread, but just finished the book and loved it! My favorite part was how skeptical it was, but looking at the discussion here about the ending I re-read a lot of it and liked it even more.
